System of Examination

Anna University conducts End Semester Examinations during April/May and in November/December every year for all UG and PG programmes. Performance in theory and practical (including final year project work) will be evaluated for a maximum of 100 marks as follows:

(i) Internal Assessments Test Marks: 20

Three continuous internal assessment tests (IATs) will be conducted throughout the semester by the department/college. Each IAT will be conducted for 100 marks (maximum) by the Department concerned. The total marks obtained in all tests put together out of 300, will be proportionately reduced for 20 marks and rounded to the nearest integer.

(ii) End Semester Examination Marks: 80

Anna University conducts End Semester Examination for 100 marks (Maximum) and the marks secured by the student is converted to 80 marks.

PASSING REQUIREMENTS

A student who secures not less than 50% of total marks prescribed for the course (Internal Assessment + End semester University Examinations) with a minimum of 45% of the marks prescribed for the end-semester University Examination, will be declared to have passed the course (subject) and acquired the relevant number of credits. This is applicable for both theory and practical courses (including project work).

If a student fails to secure a pass in theory courses in the current semester examination, he/she is allowed to write arrears examinations for the next three consecutive semesters and their internal marks shall be carried over for the above-mentioned period of three consecutive semesters. If a student fails to secure a pass in a course even after three consecutive arrears attempts, the student must redo the course in the semester in which it is offered along with regular students.

CONDITIONS FOR PROMOTION TO ENTER HIGHER SEMSTERS

The following points are to be noted by the students having arrears:

1) To enter Semester V, the student should have no arrears in Semester I. In such case, student shall redo the I Semester course/courses along with the regular First Year students.

2) To enter Semester VI, the student should have no arrears in Semester II. In such case, the student shall redo the Semester II course/courses along with the regular students.

3) To enter Semester VII, the student should have no arrears in Semester III. Failing which the student shall redo the Semester III course/courses along with the regular students.

4) To enter Semester VIII, the student should have no arrear in Semester IV. Failing which the student shall redo the Semester IV course/courses along with the regular students.

5) In case, if a student has not successfully completed all the courses of semester V at the end of semester VIII, he/she shall redo the Semester V courses along with regular students. For the subsequent semesters of VI, VII and VIII, the same procedure shall be followed, subject to the maximum permissible period for this programme.

PRACTICAL EXAMINATIONS

If a student fails to secure a pass in a laboratory course, the student shall register for the course again, when offered next by the department concerned.

If a student fails to secure a pass in project work, the student shall register for the course again, when offered next by the department concerned.

REVALUATION OF ANSWER PAPERS OF END SEMESTER EXAMINATIONS

A student can apply for revaluation of end semester examination answer paper in a theory course, within 2 weeks from the declaration of results, on payment of a prescribed fee along with prescribed application to the COE through the Head of the Institution. Through the head of the Institution, COE will intimate the revaluation results to the student concerned. There is no revaluation for laboratory course and project work.

AWARD OF DEGREE

First Class With Distinction: A student who has passed the examination in all the courses of all the eight semesters (6 semesters in the case of Lateral Entry) in the student’s First Appearance within five years (Four years in the case of Lateral Entry) with a CGPA of not less than 8.50 will be declared to have passed the examination in First class with Distinction.

First Class: A student who has passed the examination in all the courses of all eight semesters (6 semesters in the case of Lateral Entry) within Six years (Five years in the case of Lateral Entry) with a CGPA of not less than 7.00 will be declared to have passed the examination in First class.

SPECIAL EXEMPTIONS FOR STUDENTS ADMITTED IN THE AY (2017-2018) AND (2018 – 2019)

1) The students who are admitted during the AY (2017-2018) and (2018 – 2019) are permitted to appear for arrears up to VI semesters and will be allowed to move to VII semester only on completion of all the courses in the I semester. Failing which the student shall redo the Semester I course/courses along with the regular students.

2) To enter Semester VIII, the student should have no arrears in Semester II. Failing which the student shall redo the Semester II course/courses along with the regular students.

3) In case, if he/she has not completed all the courses of semester III at the end of semester VIII, he/she shall redo the Semester III courses along with regular students. For the subsequent semesters of IV, V, VI, VII and VIII, the same procedure shall be followed, subject to the maximum permissible period for this programme.
