1.0 Universal Testing Machine (UTM)

A Universal Testing Machine (UTM) is used to test the mechanical properties such as tension, compression of a given test specimen by exerting tensile, compressive or transverse stresses.

1.1 Functions of Universal Testing Machine

The main functions of UTM are to test the mechanical properties of materials. The standard tests performed by UTM are:

  1. Tensile Test
  2. Compression Test
  3. Adhesion Tests
  4. Pull-Out Tests
  5. Bending Test
  6. Hysteresis Test

  1. TRIAXIAL SHEAR TEST APPARATUS

Triaxial test equipment is used for shear strength testing on soil specimens. These tests determine the strength and the stress-strain relationship of the soil. There are several different types of triaxial compression test

  • Consolidated Drained Test (CD)
  • Consolidated-Undrained Test (CU)
  • Unconsolidated-Undrained (UU)
  1. CONSOLIDATION APPARATUS (THREE GANG)

Consolidation test is used to determine the rate and magnitude of soil consolidation when the soil is restrained laterally and loaded axially. The Consolidation test is also referred to as Standard Oedometer test or One-dimensional compression test.
